Design is a Leadership Decision: How Design Governance Creates Organisational Value [EN]

September 10, 2026 14:30 — 14:45 Stage One – MAIN HALL

Design is often expected to prove its value through KPIs, ROI calculations or business cases.
While these metrics matter, they rarely answer a more fundamental question:
Why are some organisations consistently able to create value through design while others struggle to move beyond isolated initiatives?
The difference is rarely talent, creativity or methods.
It is organisational capability.

This talk explores how design becomes a strategic capability when supported by clear principles, governance structures and decision-making processes.

Drawing on experiences from industrial design, digital product development and organisational transformation, I introduce a practical Design Value Model that helps organisations identify, communicate and strengthen the value design creates for users, employees, businesses and society.
Rather than focusing solely on measuring outcomes, the model highlights the conditions that enable impact in the first place.

In the context of FORM FUTURE’s theme “Process & Principles”, the talk argues that design creates sustainable value not because organisations invest in design, but because they embed design into how decisions are made.
Participants will gain practical insights into how design can evolve from a project-based discipline into a strategic organisational capability that supports transformation, alignment and long-term value creation.
